IELTS Exam 2026: Complete Guide for Indian Students

IELTS Academic for Indian students in 2026: who should sit it, pattern, fees in India, scores for UG/PG, and when you need IELTS for UKVI instead.

Who this page is for

Indian students planning undergraduate or postgraduate study in the USA, UK, Canada, Australia, Ireland, Germany, New Zealand or Europe — not nurses sitting OET, and not UK visa applicants who only need a SELT.

Overview

IELTS Academic is still the default English test for Indian study-abroad applicants because it is recognised for both university offers and, in its UKVI form, for UK Student visas. Official IELTS describes Academic as a four-section test — Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking — designed for study at undergraduate or postgraduate level and for some professional registration. That is a different product from General Training (work and migration) and a different booking from IELTS for UKVI (a Secure English Language Test).

What actually matters

  • Book Academic for university. Book IELTS for UKVI if a UK Student visa needs a SELT — the academic content is similar, the test report and centre are not interchangeable for UKVI.
  • Universities set their own floors (often 6.0–7.0). The visa floor can be different from the offer floor.
  • A score typically lasts two years. Time the sitting so it still covers CAS / I-20 / visa day.
  • PTE Academic is a real alternative where the university and the visa list both name it. TOEFL remains the lower-friction US default.

What the 2026 test looks like

Four sections, one sitting: Listening (~30 minutes plus transfer time on paper), Reading (60 minutes, three academic passages), Writing (60 minutes: Task 1 visual, Task 2 essay), Speaking (11–14 minutes with a human examiner). Computer-delivered IELTS is now the usual booking in Indian metros; the speaking test is still with a person. Official scored practice and dates live on IDP and British Council — StudyWhere does not sell a fake 'official paper'.

Scores Indian offers actually quote

Undergraduate floors often sit at 6.0 or 6.5. Taught master's commonly want 6.5 overall, no band below 6.0. Competitive STEM, law, journalism and some UK pre-sessional waivers want 7.0. MBA pages are programme-specific. Never treat a blog conversion as a waiver — what score do you need and the country pages in this cluster exist so you can see the pattern, then confirm on the offer.

Fees, dates and results in India

In India you book through IDP or British Council. The 2026 fee is typically in the high teens of thousands of rupees and moves by city and date — use IELTS fees in India, test dates, registration and how to check results. Computer-delivered results are faster than paper. One Skill Retake exists on some Academic bookings; UKVI rules for retakes are stricter — read the confirmation email.

When IELTS is the wrong first test

If every university on a US-heavy list prefers TOEFL, sitting only IELTS can still work but adds friction. If Australia plus a fast report is the whole plan, PTE Academic is often the operational pick. If the goal is UK nursing registration, start at OET for nurses, not this page. If the only remaining task is a UK visa, start at SELT.

Frequently asked questions

Is IELTS Academic enough for a UK Student visa?

Only if you booked IELTS for UKVI at an approved SELT centre. Generic Academic can get the offer and still fail UKVI. See SELT for UK Student visa.

Should I sit IELTS or PTE from India?

Destination and visa first, format second. Use IELTS vs PTE and the test selector.
