There is a best test for your destination, your university’s stated preference, and — honestly — whether you speak better to a person or into a microphone. Get that match right and the test is a formality. Get it wrong and you can hold a strong score that the visa route will not accept.

The four names you will actually meet in 2026 are IELTS Academic, TOEFL iBT, PTE Academic, and the Duolingo English Test (DET). CELPIP shows up mainly for Canadian immigration later, not as the default university test from India.

What actually differs between IELTS, TOEFL, PTE, and Duolingo

IELTS Academic, jointly run by the British Council, IDP, and Cambridge, is still the most flexible in recognition. Speaking is with a human examiner (including after the mid-2026 shift toward computer-delivered IELTS worldwide). Scores are 0–9 bands. It is the default safe choice when the destination is mixed or the visa office is conservative.

TOEFL iBT (ETS) is fully computer-based with integrated tasks: you may read, listen, then speak or write about both. Scores are 0–120. It remains the path of least friction for US admissions.

PTE Academic (Pearson) is fully computer-based with AI scoring, including speaking into a microphone. Scores are 10–90. Results often land within about 48 hours. It is heavily used for Australia and is a UKVI SELT option in its UKVI variant.

Duolingo English Test is shorter and cheaper, taken at home, scored 10–160. Many universities accept it for admission. Fewer visa routes treat it as sufficient on its own. Never assume DET covers the visa because it covered the offer.

Does the destination change the right test?

Yes. More than “which one is easier.”

United Kingdom. IELTS (including IELTS for UKVI) is deeply embedded. TOEFL is widely used for admission but is not on the Home Office Secure English Language Test (SELT) list, so you cannot use that TOEFL score for the Student visa. For the visa you need a SELT such as IELTS for UKVI or PTE Academic UKVI. This is the expensive mistake: admit on TOEFL, then sit a second test for UKVI.

United States. TOEFL is the most established. IELTS is widely accepted. PTE is accepted at a growing but still smaller set of institutions. DET is common as an admissions alternative — confirm the programme page. Visa (F-1) does not use a SELT list the way the UK does; the university’s I-20 is the gate.

Australia. IELTS, TOEFL, PTE, and often DET appear on university pages; PTE is especially common for admissions and later skilled-migration score grids. Subclass 500 still needs you to meet the exact instrument in force — check both the university and the visa list.

How to choose once destination and visa are settled

Better with a human in the room → IELTS speaking.
Need results in days, comfortable with AI scoring and a microphone → PTE.
Strong at integrated academic tasks (lecture + reading → response) → TOEFL.
Need a cheap, at-home admissions score and the university lists DET → Duolingo, then confirm the visa still wants something else.

Do not pick because a friend “found PTE easier.” Pick because both the offer and the visa will take that certificate.

Mistakes I still see

Choosing a test from a WhatsApp poll. Assuming admission acceptance equals visa acceptance (UK). Booking so late there is no retake.
