The rule that actually matters
English-test scores are dated. Universities and visa posts both care about the date on the TRF / score report relative to the day they assess you, not relative to the day you booked the test.
For IELTS, TOEFL iBT, PTE Academic, Duolingo English Test, and CELPIP, the working rule in 2026 is still about two years from the test date. Always confirm on the score report and on the programme/visa page — some UKVI and professional-body uses are pickier about which variant you sat, not only the calendar.
If you only remember one thing: time the test so validity covers visa day, not only the university deadline. Offers arrive months later. CAS / I-20 / PAL / biometrics can sit even later. A score that was valid at submit-time and expired at visa-time is a new test fee and a delayed intake.

Validity at a glance (typical 2026 practice)
| Test | Typical validity | Who uses it | Watch-out |
|---|---|---|---|
| IELTS Academic | 2 years | Universities worldwide | UK Student visa needs IELTS for UKVI (SELT), not a generic Academic TRF |
| IELTS for UKVI | 2 years | UK visa / SELT | Book the UKVI variant at an approved centre; the “Academic” vs “UKVI” name on the confirmation email matters |
| TOEFL iBT | 2 years | Especially US / Canada admissions | Strong for admission; not a UK SELT |
| PTE Academic | 2 years | Universities; Australia-heavy | Fast results; US acceptance is programme-specific |
| PTE Academic UKVI | 2 years | UK visa / SELT | Different product from standard PTE Academic |
| Duolingo English Test | 2 years | Many admissions offices | Cheap and fast; often not enough alone for immigration |
| CELPIP | 2 years | Canada (more immigration / some schools) | Do not sit CELPIP as your only plan for a UK or US admit |
“Two years” is measured from the test date printed on the report. If you sit on 1 March 2026, plan as if the score is unusable on 1 March 2028 — some institutions cut off earlier internally (they want X months of validity remaining at enrolment). When a portal says “valid at the time of application,” still keep a buffer for visa.
Admission validity vs visa validity
These are two clocks.
- University: the score must be valid when the admissions team evaluates you (sometimes when you enrol).
- Visa: the score must be valid when the visa application is decided, and it must be the approved variant (UK SELT is the textbook split).
A TOEFL score can be perfectly valid for a UK university offer and still be the wrong document for UKVI. Validity will not fix a non-SELT test. See the chooser.
Canada’s study permit usually rides on the DLI offer rather than a SELT stamp; you can still need a later language test for PGWP (CLB-style) that is a separate sitting. Do not spend your only IELTS date on a university minimum if you will need a higher band for a future immigration form — Canada student visa.
How to schedule it from India
Work backwards from intake, not forwards from “when I feel ready”:
- University application deadline
- Realistic offer date
- CAS / I-20 / CoE / PAL issue date
- Visa biometrics / decision window
- Sit the test 12–18 months before intake if you may retake; never inside the last four weeks unless you already have a spare score
Retakes: IELTS and TOEFL have booking gaps; PTE’s faster report is useful only if the next date exists. A validity window that expires in month 11 of a 12-month visa wait is a false economy.
Put the test on the same calendar as the application process and the timeline blog.
Frequently asked questions
Are IELTS, TOEFL, PTE, and Duolingo all valid for two years?
Typically yes, from the test date. Read your report. A university can still demand a more recent score than the test maker’s official window.
My IELTS expires a month after my visa appointment. Is that fine?
Do not gamble. If the decision (or a requested recency rule) can slip past the expiry, book a retake. Visa delays are normal.
Does a UKVI test last longer than Academic IELTS?
No. The difference is which scheme will accept it, not a longer clock.
Can I use an expired score if the university already made an offer?
The offer might stand; the visa post and some enrolment checks will not. Treat expiry as a new test unless the institution writes otherwise.
