Pick PTE when you want fast AI-scored results and your universities (especially Australia) already list PTE — or when you will book PTE Academic UKVI for a UK Student visa. Pick TOEFL when the shortlist is US-heavy and every programme publishes a TOEFL floor.

Destination and visa
United States. Default TOEFL unless every school lists PTE. See TOEFL hub and IELTS vs TOEFL for the USA.
Australia. PTE is often the operational favourite; still confirm Subclass 500 and later 485 English. See PTE hub and Australia 485.
United Kingdom. Either can work for admission; the visa usually needs a SELT (PTE Academic UKVI or IELTS for UKVI). TOEFL alone will not fix UKVI.
Canada / Ireland / NZ. Both usually work for university offers — check each page.
