Quick verdict
Pick IELTS when your shortlist includes the UK (Student visa needs a SELT such as IELTS for UKVI), when you prefer face-to-face speaking, or when you want one test accepted almost everywhere. Pick TOEFL when the list is US-heavy, you are comfortable with integrated computer tasks, or your target programmes already publish TOEFL cutoffs.

Side-by-side
| Factor | IELTS Academic | TOEFL iBT |
|---|---|---|
| Speaking | Human examiner (computer-delivered test, speaking still face-to-face in most centres) | Fully computer-based; speak into a microphone |
| Score scale | 0–9 bands | 0–120 |
| Typical results | Days to ~1 week | Often ~4–8 days |
| UK Student visa | Needs IELTS for UKVI (or another SELT) — generic Academic alone is not enough for UKVI | Widely used for admission; not a UK SELT for the visa |
| USA F-1 | Widely accepted | Most established default |
| Canada study permit | Widely accepted for DLI offers | Widely accepted |
| Australia Subclass 500 | Widely accepted | Widely accepted |
| Validity | Typically 2 years | Typically 2 years — score validity |
Rough translation band (not a waiver): IELTS 6.5 ≈ TOEFL 79–93. Always use the programme’s published grid.
Destination and visa — why “global” still has a winner
United Kingdom. TOEFL can unlock the offer; it often will not unlock the Student visa. Book IELTS for UKVI or PTE Academic UKVI if UK immigration is in the plan. Sitting Academic IELTS because a friend did is how people pay twice.
United States. TOEFL remains the path of least friction for admissions. IELTS is widely accepted. If 80% of your list is US, default TOEFL unless you already hold a strong IELTS score.
Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Ireland. Both tests usually work for university admission. The study visa rides on the offer and funds more than on a SELT brand — but post-study rules (PGWP language, 485 English, etc.) can require a later sitting at a higher band. See what IELTS score do you need?.
Germany and EU public universities. IELTS and TOEFL both appear on English-taught Master’s pages; neither replaces APS or a blocked account for the visa file.
Who should pick which
- IELTS — multi-country shortlist, any UK visa, human speaking, or you already have a valid band.
- TOEFL — US-centric list, integrated academic tasks, or published TOEFL minimums on every target programme.
- Neither alone fixes a visa — confirm immigration and admission lists separately.
Practical advice
- One strong score beats switching tests for rumours.
- Book the named variant (Academic vs UKVI) that the visa page shows.
- Time the test so validity covers visa day, not only the application deadline — score validity.
- Need programme-specific bands? What IELTS score do you need?
