The UK Student visa guide already covers CAS, the 28-day maintenance rule, SELT vs Academic IELTS, and generic refusal grounds. This page is only what goes wrong for people applying from the UAE — Emirati citizens, and the much larger group of Indian, Pakistani, Filipino, and other residents holding a UAE residency visa.
If you are applying from India with no UAE residence, use the UK visa spoke. Do not mix the two stories.

1. Sitting IELTS Academic in Dubai and treating it as the visa test
UAE test centres run Academic IELTS all week. Universities often accept it for the offer. The Student visa usually wants a SELT — IELTS for UKVI or PTE Academic UKVI — unless you are exempt on the Home Office list. Families discover this after the CAS is issued and the TRF cannot be used.
Do this instead: read the CAS English line. If it names a UKVI number, book that product at an approved centre. Admission vs visa is unpacked on which English test and IELTS vs PTE. Do not resit Academic “for a higher band” when the visa needs a different certificate name.
2. Maintenance funds that are in the wrong country, currency, or 28-day window
UAE salaries look strong in AED. UKVI cares about a GBP threshold, outstanding tuition on the CAS, and a continuous 28-day balance in an account you can prove is yours (or a parent’s, with the right documents). Common Dubai versions:
- Balance dips on rent day or a credit-card settlement during the 28 days
- Funds sitting in India while the applicant lives in JLT, with no paper tying the two
- A company account, or cash deposited by an employer the week before biometrics
- Converting AED at a WhatsApp rate instead of the statement
Do this instead: park the required GBP-equivalent before the 28-day clock, in the account you will print. If a parent in India funds you, that is a different evidence set — not “my dad will NEFT after CAS.” Numbers and document shape: UK financial requirements.
3. A CAS that does not match the life you actually lived in the UAE
Credibility refusals for UAE-based applicants often look like this: a three-year gap after a local diploma, a sudden UK master’s in a new field, and a SOP that never mentions the Dubai job. Or the opposite — a strong UAE career and a course that looks like a visa, not a progression.
Do this instead: the CAS course must be a believable next step from transcripts and the employment letters you will also carry. If the story only works as “I want to move to London,” it will not survive a genuine-student read. Country context: study in the UK.
4. Mixing residency, passport, and “I’m already in the UK on a visit”
Applying as if you were a visitor who will switch inside the UK, or using a friend’s London address as a shortcut, is how files get messy. UAE residence does not make you a UK resident. An Emirati passport does not skip CAS.
Do this instead: apply from outside the UK unless you are already on a visa that legally allows a switch — most students are not. Use the nationality UKVI lists for TB tests and document checklists, not the city you shop in.
5. Dependants and family cash treated as an afterthought
Partners and children in the UAE change the maintenance math and the credibility story. Adding dependants after the CAS, or showing one account that must cover everyone after school fees in Dubai, is how a “simple master’s” file fails.
Do this instead: decide dependants before the CAS is issued. Recalculate maintenance. If the family stays in the UAE, say so consistently on the form — do not imply they are relocating and then show no funds for it.
What this page will not do
It will not reprint the UKVI fee table or the Graduate Route. Those change and already live on the UK visa and post-study work spokes.
Before you pay for biometrics
- CAS English code matches the certificate you hold
- 28-day funds are in the right account, in the right name
- Employment and transcripts support this course
- Dependants are either fully funded or not on the form
If a line is off, fix it before you submit. Re-using a refused packet with a new IELTS date is how people spend a second IHS. Bring the CAS and the bank PDF to chat.
